Tiktok Search vs Google Search

40% of Gen Z users prefer using TikTok and Instagram for search over Google Search. So I decided to try it out and searched for ‘places to visit in London’ on Tiktok and Google search.

Straightaway, I could see the difference. Tiktok is visual with ‘user-generated’ videos of the actual location. Google started with Ads and text-based content which suggests spending time reading about places to visit in London.

Adrienne Sheares hosted a mini focus group with Gen Zs to learn more about how they use TikTok for search. She wrote “as an elder millennial who came of age when Google became a verb, I had difficulty grasping that ~40% of Gen Zers use TikTok for searching for info like where to eat. The thought of scrolling through endless videos to find info sounded like a big waste of time 🤷🏾‍♀️”

One of the results from my TikTok search had a thumbnail with the text “Secret location. London’s most beautiful courtyard” and some emojis. I was drawn to that video on tiktok and I was impressed at the creativity.

It was an Ad! But it was well done.
