How do you know when it is your time to do something remarkable?
My earliest recollection was when I travelled to Lagos for the first time from Ibadan with my mum to start processing my UK visa application.
It wasn’t a good experience.
As we approached Lagos, I started feeling unwell on the public transport. We got to the taxi park and all I wanted to do was lie down anywhere. We ended up in a hospital on that trip.
Another experience I’ve shared multiple times was when the A-Levels college I attended in the UK nominated me to speak to journalists as one of the high performers that year. On the event day, I skipped school because I was afraid.
More recently, I’ve been looking for more ways to share my faith and encourage people, but also very mindful of how that could be perceived, especially within a work environment. I prayed about it.
Then one day at work, one of the directors asked what kind of music I listen to because she wanted to play it across the entire office floor. Although there’s always music playing, it isn’t the type of music I generally listen to.
Gospel, I replied. I only generally listen to gospel music.
Who’s your favourite artist?
Hillsong Music.
Which song?
Hmm. Let’s try Oceans.
So she searched for Oceans in her playlist and put it on.
This will put everyone in the office to sleep, she joked. Is there a more upbeat one?
Yes, sure. I’ve been listening to Watch him turn it by Travis Green. I love it too.
She searched for it and immediately started playing it. The intro was upbeat and the vibes were good.
Then 27 seconds into the song. I froze and thought to myself … Oh my God!
We feel so unprepared when something we’ve been waiting for finally happens.
How do you know it’s your time to do something remarkable?
You’ll question everything. You could find yourself running, hiding, saying no, feeling the weight of imposter syndrome, finishing prematurely, or totally messing it all up.
Just before you do any of that, try these first:
- Breathe and take some time to soak it in.
- Remind yourself that this is the opportunity you have been preparing for.
- Grab it with both hands, even if they are shaking.
Listen to Watch Him Turn It and share in the comments why you think I froze.
