Sometimes you hear “no” too quickly, even if it is a ‘No Problem’
Our daughter asked me for a snack. It was snack time, so she asked confidently.
I said, “Nooo…”
She paused. Looked disappointed. Then just walked away.
No Problem from Flash
Flash is one of my favourite characters in Zootropolis. After watching Zootopia 2 (and 1, and the mini series on Disney+), I started messing around the house with “Nooo…. Problem”. It’s fun. The kids get a laugh.
The first few times, though, the emotional transition from when they hear the ‘Nooo’ (rejection) to when ‘Problem’ (approval) finally lands is interesting to see.
The kids asked me recently about emotional intelligence. One way we described it was learning not to react too fast because sometimes you don’t have the full context.
That stuck with me.
– We hear “no” and assume total rejection
– We feel delayed and assume disapproval.
– We fill in the gaps ourselves.
The pause in the middle is uncomfortable, but the real challenge is not knowing if it is a No! Or a ‘Nooo… Problem!
Whichever it is.
– Hold yourself together
– Put a smile on your face
– Don’t be quick to accept rejection
– Persevere and be persistent
It’s my birthday today, and this is my note to self.
Planning to wish me a happy birthday or give me a gift of prayer?
Nooo….
Problem!
😃😃.
